Perth Scorchers v Adelaide Strikers Big Bash League Predictions and Match Preview - Top two sides clash

Rippa Staff 24 Jan 2018
  • Battle of the top sides
  • Home final at stake for the winner

Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers have already booked a home semi-final and now go to the WACA for their final game on Thursday, January 25 with top spot at stake.

Does the fact both have locked in home semi-finals make their last round clash, any less competitive? Not at all; if anything, these two sides will want to give their all as the winner of this clash gets to host the Grand Final - should they make it.

Match Preview

The points tally doesn’t lie – these two sides have been the most consistent sides of this season. The Scorchers have picked up seven wins of their nine games this season and have 14 points, occupying the second place. The only sides to defeat the Scorchers, this season, have been the Thunder and the Heat.

The Strikers too have 14 points from nine games after having picked up seven wins. The only sides they were not able to defeat were the Scorchers and the Hurricanes. It is their superior net run rate (NRR) that puts them ahead of the Scorchers in the points tally.

These sides have already met once at Alice Springs when the Scorchers won by six wickets. It was a game that had Ashton Agar (3/19) routing the Strikers for 112 which was then easily overhauled thanks to Hilton Cartwright’s innings (47* from 44 balls).

Match Significance

On paper, this match may not have much significance as both the sides are already guaranteed a spot in the semis and a home advantage. However, should they progress further, the advantage of having a home final could be decided by this fixture.

Moreover, the Scorchers have a chance of doing a season double over the Strikers, as they have already defeated them at Alice Springs.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

Just like they do every season, the Scorchers have banked on the performances of multiple players. Seven players have scored more than 100 runs in the season, with Ashton Turner (250 runs, avg. of 41.66, SR of 166.66) leads the pack and Cartwright (243 runs) a close second.

The Strikers have leaned heavily on their opening batsmen Alex Carey, whose run-tally of 400 runs (avg. of 57.14, SR of 139.37) is second only to D’Arcy Short. Colin Ingram (257 runs) has also chipped whenever required.

Coming to the worries, the Scorchers will have doubts on their overseas replacement Tim Bresnan (economy of 10.28) who has struggled to convince in his four matches so far.

Beyond Carey, Ingram, and Travis Head this Strikers’ batting unit have been largely untested and that may prove to be their Achilles heel.

Tips and Predictions

The Scorchers have a narrow 6-5 advantage over the Strikers, with their win early in the season giving them that edge. Can they do an encore? Back the Scorchers to win at odds of $1.82 (Palmerbet).

The presence of Carey gives the Strikers an edge when it comes to the first six overs. Back the Strikers to score more in the power play at odds of $1.90 (CrownBet).

Cartwright has been a silent contributor this season for the Scorchers with some vital runs across the games. His ability to find a maximum when needed is exemplary. Back Cartwright to score at least one six at odds of $2.00 (Ladbrokes).
