Rising Pune Supergiant beat Mumbai Indians to secure their place in the IPL 2017 final. But Mumbai get another chance in the second qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders at Bangalore on Friday, May 19.

Pune await the winner but with weather threatening to play spoilsport, there is bound to be an element of surprise in this match-up of equals.

How did they reach the playoffs?

Mumbai Indians got a rude shock of reality when Rising Pune Supergiant thumped them in the first qualifier. After topping the league standings and starting as favorites, Mumbai came crashing down at their fortress Wankhede. Thanks to their top placing in the league, they now have a second chance to qualify for the final.

Kolkata Knight Riders qualified fourth from the league after flirting with the top two positions for a long time. Losing form at the crucial time before the playoffs, they did not start as favorites against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator. However, they adapted to the sluggish Bangalore pitch well than Hyderabad and even survived the rain scare.

Key players

Mumbai flopped when it mattered the most but otherwise their team is one of the most settled units. Rohit Sharma has an envious top order led by Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel. Bowling suffered at the death in the hands of MS Dhoni but otherwise Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McCleneghan and co. have been steady.

Gautam Gambhir’s experience is so vital at the top of the order for the Knight Riders. As shown in the eliminator, his calmness combined with aggression makes him a rare entity. Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa would be his key personnel while Sunil Narine and Nathan Coulter-Nile gives depth with the ball.

X-factor

Rohit makes batting look so easy that he takes the pitch out of equation. With his side in need of a lift, Captain Rohit needs to take charge on a tricky Bangalore wicket.

With a no-nonsense technique and an uncluttered mind, Chris Lynn is your quintessential T20 player. Having already decimated attacks this season, Lynn would be the focus once more.

Line-ups

Harbhajan Singh is ready to make a comeback on a pitch that should suit his bowling. Karn Sharma though has performed admirably and may edge the battle. Nitish Rana versus Ambati Rayudu debate will rage once again.

Manish Pandey will look to slot back in, probably in the place of Ishank Jaggi. Kuldeep Yadav may also get a look-in.

Head to head

If Mumbai have a choice of picking an opponent, Kolkata would be it. Mumbai have a formidable 15-5 record against the Knight Riders. This includes winning their last five games against them including the two fixtures this season.

Predictions

Rain will be a threat once again with Bangalore receiving rains in the evening consistently. A shortened game would favor the chasing putting more emphasis on the toss. The market is divided but back Mumbai Indians to win in case of a normal game.

On a tricky pitch like this, runs at the top could become crucial. Lynn’s flashing blade may become crucial for KKR. Back him at odds to be their best batsman.

Aggression in the power play makes the Knight Riders a tough cookie. Back them to score more in the first six overs.
