Melbourne Renegades v Melbourne Stars Big Bash League Preview and Predictions - Stars to remain winless

Rippa Staff 10 Jan 2018

Melbourne Stars shape up for the ‘Melbourne Derby’ against the Renegades in the worst possible form and Etihad Stadium will be reverberating, no matter what, on Friday, January 12.

As we get closer and closer to the business end of things, things are getting a bit clearer in the BBL07 race to the finals. The top six have set the bar by running away from the bottom two – who are yet to open their account.

That makes the bottom-of-the-pile Melbourne Stars’ task much more difficult as they bid for a first win of the competition.

Match Preview

The Renegades are third in the points tally with eight points after six games (W4, L2). They have lost only twice in the last eight games (W6) in Big Bash, dating back to BBL06, and both the losses have come against the Scorchers.

The Stars have made the worst possible start, losing five on the trot and are stuck to the bottom of the table. In fact, they have lost their last eight games in Big Bash, dating back to BBL06. How can they come out of this slump.

These two sides have met at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 6, with the Renegades winning by six wickets. The architect of that win was Mohammad Nabi (52 from 30 balls) with support from Aaron Finch (43 from 22 balls).

Historically, though, the Stars have dominated this fixture and hold an 8-4 record and at the Etihad the record reads 4-1. However, the Renegades have won two of the last three encounters.

Match Significance

The Renegades are in a tight three-way ‘race to the finals’ along with the Heat and the Hurricanes – all on eight points. A win gives them a leeway while a loss will be a setback, especially with the Hurricanes finding tailwind in their charge.

With no wins in their kitty, there is only one way the Stars can hope to be in the race – by winning.

Squad Changes

The Renegades lose their skipper Finch, who leaves the duties with Cameron White. This will be the last game of BBL07 for Nabi.

Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa leave the Stars squad to be united with the national ODI team.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

White is in imperious form for the Renegades (285 runs, avg. of 142.50) while DJ Bravo has been their champion with the ball (12 wickets). The worry, though, is the fact that barring Nabi (economy of 6.13) all the four main bowlers are leaking above seven runs per over.

With Stoinis (179 runs, five wickets) out of the reckoning, Glenn Maxwell (155 runs, SR of 138.39) is the biggest hope for the Stars. With no one else firing, the Stars have problems all over the park.

Tips and Predictions

The Stars will need a huge slice of luck or a Halley’s comet falling on their way to change their fortunes. Back the Renegades to win at odds of $1.67 (Ladbrokes).

The Renegades also look good to ping the boundaries more than their counterparts and score more fours at odds of $1.90 (TopBetta).

White’s form is so pristine that it warrants a look at the runs market. Back the Renegades skipper to score at least 25 runs at odds of $1.83 (Ladbrokes).
