Melbourne Renegades v Adelaide Strikers Big Bash League Predictions and Match Preview - Renegades to edge a thriller

Rippa Staff 21 Jan 2018

With just six games to go before the finals, the stage is set for one final push in BBL07 and the Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers meet in a crucial game at Etihad Stadium on Monday, January 22.

The Renegades need at least two wins from their final three games to make the finals, while the Adelaide Strikers need to win at least one of their remaining two matches.

With old Strikers favourite Kieron Pollard getting ready to turn up for the Renegades, there could be more than two points that these sides will fight for.

Match Preview

The Renegades have eight points from seven games and are fourth in the table. They have the same points as the Thunder and the Heat, but the Renegades have two matches in hand.

For the Strikers, the equation is simple – they currently have 12 points from eight games and need at least a win from their remaining two games. The finals’ qualification aside, the Strikers would be keen on securing home advantage as well.

This encounter has in the past been a very close encounter with six encounters ending with three wins apiece. At Etihad Stadium, the Strikers have won the last two encounters and enjoy a 2-1 overall record.

Match Significance

The Renegades can qualify for the finals if they win all their remaining games. There is a plethora of options available to qualify with fewer wins, but with Thunder picking up a crucial win, the Renegades wouldn’t want to leave anything to chance.

The Strikers are well-placed to have some leeway for this encounter, but after such a good season they would want to aim for home advantage. A loss will not be devastating, but it can hamper their final placing in the top-four.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

The Renegades’ top-scorer is Cameron White (285 runs, avg. of 142.50) who is currently on national duty. That leaves the likes of Tom Cooper (162 runs, avg. of 40.50) to step up and take charge! The worry for them is the same – lack of runs from the other batsmen.

The Strikers are travelling by the same boat. Their top scorer is Alex Carey (368 runs, avg. of 61.33, SR of 139.92), who is right now with the Australian ODI squad. That leaves Colin Ingram (189 runs, avg. of 31.50, SR of 128.57) to lead the side – literally – with the bat. The worry for the Strikers is the fact that their middle-order hasn’t got enough chances to showcase their worth.

Tips and Predictions

The huge gap between their games may prove to be a boon for the Renegades, but there is an equal chance of it turning to be a hindrance. However, they may just pip their visitors for a win at odds of $2.02 (TopBetta).

The availability of Kieron Pollard for this game increases the interest from the Renegades point of view. Will we see the burly West Indian ping the maximums? Back the Renegades to score more sixes than the Strikers at odds of $2.25 (William Hill).

With the absence of usual suspects, both sides could field different personnel in the first six overs. Back the Strikers to score more, at odds of $1.91 (Ladbrokes).
