Kolkata Knight Riders v Rajasthan Royals IPL Match Preview and Predictions - KKR to win through from eliminator

Rippa Staff 22 May 2018
  • Knight Riders have won five and lost just once in Kolkata against the Royals.
  • Knight Riders have won their last three matches.
  • Knight Riders have won four of their seven home matches this IPL.
  • Royals have won only twice away from home this IPL, in seven matches.

After booking their place in the playoffs almost at the last minute, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals face off in the eliminator in the Indian Premier League at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, May 23.

While the Knight Riders always played hide and seek with the top-four standings, the Royals needed a late push from the now-departed Jos Buttler to pick up the final place at the last moment. This has all the signs of an interesting match, although the hosts start slight favourites.

Match Preview

Kolkata won their last league match by five-wickets over Sunrisers Hyderabad to book their spot in the top-three of the league phase. A fantastic slog-over spell of bowling from Prasidh Krishna (4/30) restricted the Sunrisers to 172/9. The target was anchored by Chris Lynn (55 off 43 balls) and Robin Uthappa (45 off 34) to lead Kolkata to 173/5.

The Knight Riders are enjoying sprightly batting form of multiple batsmen, led by captain Dinesh Karthik (438 runs, SR 149.48). The consistency of their all-rounders Sunil Narine (327 runs at SR 189.01, 16 wickets) and Andre Russell (264 runs at SR 189.92, 13 wickets) is a huge positive.

The Royals didn’t let the absence of Jos Buttler affect them and swamped Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last league match by 30-runs. Rahul Tripathi anchored the innings with 80* off 58 and Heinrich Klaasen made 32 off 21 to help reach 164/5. Shreyas Gopal (4/16) put the brakes and restricted the Challengers to 134 all out.

Buttler will be missed, but the Royals would like to see Sanju Samson (391 runs, SR 138.65) value his wicket more. Ajinkya Rahane’s low scoring-rates are a worry (324 runs, SR 119.11), but Rajasthan will hope to keep surprising everyone.

The two fixtures between these sides this season were won by the Knight Riders. The first match in Jaipur saw the Knight Riders win by seven-wickets. The Royals could only muster 160/8, which was easily chased by Kolkata, riding on Uthappa’s 48 off 36 and Karthik’s 42* off 23.

In the second match in Kolkata, Kuldeep Yadav sparkled with 4/20 to help restrict the Royals to 142 all out despite Buttler’s 39 off 22. Lynn with 45 off 42 and Karthik with 41* off 31 were the architects of 145/4 in 18 overs.
