Rippa Staff 11 May 2018

  • Narine has 25 wickets against Kings XI in 14 encounters, at an average of 14.19, which is much lower than his career average.

With things getting tight in the race for the playoffs, match 44 of the Indian Premier League between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in Indore has an interesting prelude.

Both sides have lost momentum in recent games and are in grave danger of missing the playoffs, should they lose another match.

Kings XI have 12 points in ten games, but have lost three of their last four games. KKR have ten points from 11 games and their successive losses to Mumbai Indians dragged them down into the bottom-half.

Match Preview

Kings XI were one of the surprise packages of the season so far, with innovative captaincy and explosive performances. However, their momentum was stalled in the last four matches that saw them lose thrice. Much of the blame has to be on their over-dependence of opening blasts, which ironically was their ticket to the top-half of points tally.

KL Rahul (471 runs, SR 156.47) continues to be their lynchpin with the bat, but the consistent failure of their middle-order is a worry for captain Ravichandran Ashwin. Bowling isn’t a worry, though, with Andrew Tye (16 wickets) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (14 wickets) slicing through opponent batting units.

The Knight Riders were never consistently in the hold of their top-four position, but losses to traditional nemesis MI have made them the challengers for playoffs, rather than being the trendsetters.

Irresponsible batting and constant failures to stitch partnerships has resulted in heavy losses, like the 102-run loss to MI in the last game. The bane for KKR is the fact that six of their batsmen aggregate over 200, but none of them feature in the top-ten batsmen of the season. With the ball, Sunil Narine (13 wickets) continues to lead their charge, but the increase in their economy rates is a worry for captain Dinesh Karthik.

The earlier game between the sides in Kolkata ended in a nine-wicket romp for the Kings XI albeit by DLS method.

Key Players

After a blistering start to his season, the ‘Universe boss’ Chris Gayle seems to have lost some steam. But, a game against his old employers is not a bad game to get back to form – in 14 innings against KKR, he has 594 runs at a SR of 153.48.

There were high hopes on Chris Lynn, but the Aussie swashbuckler has flattered to deceive so far. With just 298 runs this season in 11 innings at a strike rate of 134.23, he has a greater responsibility to get back to being the leader of the pack.
