India v Australia 1st T20 Preview and Predictions - Rivals begins three-match series

Rippa Staff 6 Oct 2017

It has been a rough Indian tour for the Australians who have been thumped 4-1 in the five-match ODI series, but they now have a chance to salvage some pride in the three-match T20 series which starts on Saturday, October 7 at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi.

Even in these days where it has become a norm for the Kangaroos to lose away from home, it was a chastening loss in the ODI series.

As the stand-in coach David Saker put it, it is more a case of mindset than skills for the visitors as they struggled for consistency in the ODIs. India were a much better side and deserved the series win. Will the story be any different in the T20s?

Match Preview

For a nation that is home to one of the premier T20 tournaments, India strangely has no successful T20 international selection policy. Picking ODI specialists to do the same job – although they are successful for their franchises – may not work in this era of specialists. Question marks also hover around the non-selection of Ajinkya Rahane, the man-in-form having scored four half-centuries in the ODI series.

Does that make them an easy meat? Far from it, because Virat Kohli’s side is still the team to beat. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kohli and Manish Pandey are regulars for their IPL sides while Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneswar Kumar are two of the best death bowlers any captain can dream of.

Steve Smith on the other hand will have the luxury of T20 specialists flown in as replacements for the ODI regulars. The scars of the ODI loss should not be a hindrance for the likes of Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, Daniel Christian or Moises Henriques.

But, unsurprisingly, the onus of runs still is on the trio of David Warner, Aaron Finch and Smith. The presence of Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell adds a bit of muscle to the middle-order but is that enough to overcome the hosts?

Line-ups

Shikhar Dhawan returns to the squad and should take his place at the top of the order. Kedar Jadhav, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav could be the ones to miss out. Kohli will have a tough choice to choose two among Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

It could be a toss-up between Tye and Behrendorff for the third seamer slot and the left-arm pace of the latter could be a surprise weapon.

Stats

India played five T20Is this year winning three. They defeated England 2-1 at home and Sri Lanka 1-0 away from home. Their only series loss came in the one-off match against West Indies.

Australia have three wins and three defeats in their last six T20Is which included an away win over Sri Lanka.

Predictions and Tips

India are favourites in the betting market with odds of $1.62 (William Hill) on their win. But, Australia at odds of $2.38 (bet365) may just spring a surprise.

This Indian side’s penchant to score sixes could see them score more than their counterparts. Back India to score the most sixes at odds of $2.00 (bet365).

Rohit’s finesse at scoring sixes was evident in the ODIs and should once again come to the fore in the T20Is. Back him to score at least one six at odds of $1.57 (Ladbrokes).
