The two semi-finalists of IPL 2016 – Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders - will face-off at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Friday, April 7 to kick-start their IPL 2017 challenge.

Match Preview

Gujarat Lions have one of the strongest top orders in the entire IPL. They were the only side last season to score 70 or more in the power play – a feat they performed four times. Five of their players scored more than 300 runs – another top stat last season.

The problem for captain Suresh Raina though is their brittle middle order that was found wanting last year. With Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja out injured, the challenge is manifold.

Bowling was spearheaded last season by Dhawal Kulkarni who was consistently taking wickets in the power play. In Praveen Kumar, they have one of the most economical bowler up front.

New recruits Munaf Patel, Manpreet Gony, Nathu Singh and Basil Thampi are expected to provide depth. Shivil Kaushik will be expected to build on his success from last season while Ishan Kishan would be closely watched.

The Knight Riders are very strong with their domestic players with Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Yousuf Pathan, Suryakumar Yadav leading their batting. Even in bowling the two Yadavs – Kuldeep and Umesh - will be a handful for any opposition.

Shakib al Hasan will be missing in action from this match while Colin de Grandhomme, who replaced Andre Rusell, may not slot straight into the playing XI. The bench is light on strength – especially in the domestic players and that could hurt the Knight Riders.

Bowling looks very strong with Trent Boult and Chris Woakes making a strong unit together with Umesh, Kuldeep and Narine.

Line-ups

Raina does not have much choice with his first XI especially since Bravo and Jadeja are injured. McCullum, Smith, Finch and Faulkner could be the overseas contingent while Shadab Jakati could pip others in the race for second spinner slot.

Gambhir has a tough choice to make on Shakib’s place and may go for the hard-hitting Chris Lynn unless he wants to experiment with De Grandhomme straight away. Woakes, Narine and Boult will be the other overseas choices.

Stats

Lions did a double over Knight Riders last year. At Eden Gardens, they won by five-wickets thanks to an aggressive fifty by Dinesh Karthik. And at Kanpur, they won by six-wickets riding on a super spell of 4/8 by Dwayne Smith.

Predictions

Lions start as slight favourites for this encounter and at odds of $1.80 (William Hill) they are a decent punt. Knight Riders are offered odds of $2.10 (bet365) to win the match and generally they start well.

Considering their top-heavy line-up, the Lions could pip the Knight Riders in the power play. Odds of $1.80 (Ladbrokes) are offered on the Lions to score more in the first six overs and that looks a very good option. Also back the Lions to score the most sixes at $1.80 (Ladbrokes).
