Michael Clarke will lead Australia into battle

Australia look the goods to take the series lead by inflicting a second straight defeat on England in the third test at Edgbaston.

The series is currently level at 1-1 after two matches but it is Australia who have the momentum and start as favourites to win the match in Birmingham.

While England recorded what seemed like a big victory in the first Test match at Cardiff, Australia recorded a landslide victory at Lord’s last week to level the series. The toss played a big factor in the first two games with England and Australia using it to their advantage in the first and second Test respectively.

Australia have not won an Ashes series in England since 2001 and Michael Clarke and company may start to think that this is their year after all, with the unity of this Australian team perhaps telling on the hosts.

England will take inspiration from that momentous comeback in 2005 when they were 1-0 down after the first Test that is a part of Ashes folklore now. On that occasion, Michael Vaughan’s England side showed just how good they were with Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen leading from the front.

While Australia are likely to be unchanged with Chris Rogers fit and Peter Nevill set to retain the wicketkeeper spot, England have already dropped Gary Ballance from the squad with Jonny Bairstow taking his place in the side.

The latter has been in superb form in county cricket off late but facing Mitchell Johnson & Co. will be a different proposition altogether. Mark Wood will need a fitness test and could yet miss the test match.

If Alastair Cook and England’s fast bowlers get their wish of an authentic English wicket, it will be difficult for the visitors to outplay the hosts but Australia have all the momentum in the world right now.
