England v Australia 5th ODI Preview and Predictions - England seek historic whitewash

Rippa Staff 23 Jun 2018
  • England have won seven of their last eight home ODIs against Australia.
  • England have won seven of the last nine ODIs at this venue.
  • Australia have lost 16 of their last 17 ODIs away from home.
  • England have never beaten Australia 5-0 in an ODI series.

Four contrasting wins later, England stand on the verge of a historic first-ever series whitewash against Australia as the sides clash in the 5th ODI on Sunday.

One common theme across all the four matches has been Australia’s poor display, which threatens to ruin their hopes of salvaging pride with at least a single win.

The fifth ODI will be played at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester on Sunday, June 24 in a match that has serious consequences even though it is a dead rubber in theory.

Match Preview

After blasting the highest-ever ODI score in the third ODI, England continued their relentless pressure with another sublime pressure winning the fourth ODI by six-wickets.

Batting first, Australian innings got the impetus from centuries by Aaron Finch (100 off 106 balls) and Shaun Marsh (101 off 92). However, they were guilty of not accelerating to the level required and that proved to be their undoing in the end.

David Willey cleaned up the lower middle-order with 4/43 limiting the damage in the final overs. Australia ended up with 310/8 which was at least 40 runs shorter than what they threatened to deliver.

The inexperienced Aussie attack was once again put under pressure by the opening partnership of Jason Roy (101 off 83) and Jonny Bairstow (79 off 66) who added 174 runs in under 24 overs. That set the wheels in motion for another thumping loss for the visitors.

Joss Buttler blasted his way to the winning line with 54* off 29 making sure that there are no late hiccups. Ashton Agar tried his bit with 2/48, but England were never in the mood to relent their control of the match.

Roy (303 runs, SR 119.29) and Bairstow (288 runs, SR 140.48) have been stupendous all through the series for England, while Adil Rashid (11 wickets, ER 5.94) and Moeen Ali (eight wickets, ER 5.03) have been effective with the ball.

Australia do not boast of many heroes with just Shaun Marsh (280 runs, SR 104.47) managing to salvage some pride. Any Aussie hopes of a consolation win will depend on the players rallying around Marsh.

It is tough to pick up a low point for England, but if we have to pick one it will be the form of Joe Root (103 runs, SR 75.73). Can he stamp his authority with an innings that befits his class?

Back to his favourite position and against his favourite opposition, Finch knows that his classy century from the fourth ODI has been clouded by his slow-paced innings. Can he make amends?
