Rippa Staff 26 May 2018
  • Sunrisers have played one IPL final before winning one title, while Super Kings reached six finals and won two titles.
  • Super Kings have won eight of their ten matches against Sunrisers, including the last three.
  • Sunrisers have scored the highest opening partnership in nine of their 16 matches this IPL.

It’s the grand final time in the Indian Premier League and a confident Chennai Super Kings will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, May 27.

The Super Kings won the first qualifier to reach the final, while Sunrisers triumphed in the second qualifier to make it to this match. Who will win the final and be crowned 2018 IPL champions?

Match Preview

In their last match, the Super Kings defeated the Sunrisers by two-wickets in the first qualifier. Hyderabad struggled their way to 139/7 only after a late assault by Carlo Brathwaite (43 off 29 balls) breathed life into their innings. Chennai struggled to get past the squeeze of Hyderabad bowlers in the middle-overs, but Faf du Plessis (67 off 42) ensured that Chennai reached 140/8 in the last over.

Chennai continue to enjoy the batting success of Ambati Rayudu (586 runs, SR 153) while Shane Watson and MS Dhoni aggregated 400+ for the season. Bowling workload has generally been shared, with Shardul Thakur (15 wickets, ER 9.16) leading the charts. Lungi Ngidi (ten wickets, ER 5.90) keeps impressing with his economy.

Sunrisers managed to edge past Kolkata Knight Riders by 14-runs in the second qualifier. After stuttering through their innings, Hyderabad got a late boost from Rashid Khan (34* off 10) to lift their score to 174/7. Kolkata looked set to chase that down, but Hyderabad managed to strangle in the middle-overs through Rashid (3/19) to limit the Knight Riders to 160/9.

Kane Williamson (688 runs, SR 143.33) remains their best bet with the bat, but only Shikhar Dhawan (471 runs, SR 139.34) has been his partner-in-runs. Bowling is all about the pair of Rashid (21 wickets, ER 6.78) and Siddharth Kaul (21 wickets, ER 8.0).

The sides have met thrice this season, with Super Kings winning all the three matches. The first match in Hyderabad saw Chennai win a close encounter by four-runs. The second match in Pune was a more comprehensive affair as the Super Kings romped home by eight-wickets. The first qualifier was another close affair as Hyderabad edged past Chennai by two-wickets.

There’s no doubt that Chennai will start as favourites, but Sunrisers have the resources to upset the odds. The bowling might of Williamson may just about edge the batting efficiency of Dhoni’s side.
