Chennai Super Kings v Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL Match Preview and Predictions - CSK seek form in top-of-the-table clash

Rippa Staff 12 May 2018
  • In eight encounters between these sides, CSK have won six and lost just two.
  • Sunrisers have conceded the least runs per over (7.37) while Super Kings have scored the most (9.30).
  • Williamson has six fifties in 11 innings this season.
  • Rashid Khan has 106 dot balls this season – just two less than the leader Jasprit Bumrah after 11 innings.

After another poor bowling performance delivered a chastening loss, Chennai Super Kings now face a top-of-the-table clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pune on Sunday, May 13.

CSK have 14 points from 11 games, but have lost three of their last five games. Though their playoff qualification is not in danger, the alarm bells are picking pace. Not so much for SRH who have picked up six wins on the trot and look strong enough to maintain their hold of the top spot.

Match Preview

The Super Kings were one of the earlier trendsetters of the season, baking their performances on the experienced heads of MS Dhoni, Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu, and Dwayne Bravo. However, dwindling control from their bowlers has begun to show its effect as the team’s confidence has taken a toll.

Rayudu (435 runs, SR 151.04) continues to be their torchbearer with the bat, with ample support from Dhoni (393 runs, SR 163.75). Bowling is a worry, with no bowlers taking more than nine wickets. In addition, only two bowlers have conceded under eight runs per over, underlining their growing concerns about lack of control.

SRH have no such worries, as they continue to dish excellent performances on a consistent basis.  Kane Williamson (493 runs, SR 135.43) has been their shining beacon with the bat and Shikhar Dhawan (290 runs, SR 138.09) too is improving his form. However, their middle-order woes remain a worry.

The Sunrisers’ bowling is led by the mystery of Rashid Khan (13 wickets, economy 7.29) and control of Siddharth Kaul (13 wickets, economy 7.50). With all their bowlers conceding under eight runs an over, they continue to be the most difficult bowling unit to face.

The last time these sides faced each other, CSK held on to a four-run win in a last-over thriller. Rayudu (79 off 37 balls) and Williamson (84 off 51 balls) were the best players for their respective sides.

Key Players

While every other CSK bowler started to fade off, Ravindra Jadeja (seven wickets, economy rate 7.69) has improved over the last couple of games. His control solves one headache for his captain, who is still struggling with his bowling options.

After a brief lull in his performances, Dhawan has returned to form with a match-winning knock of 92* against Delhi Daredevils. He looks determined to make up for the lost time with another sprightly performance.
