Brisbane Heat v Hobart Hurricanes Big Bash League Preview and Predictions - Hurricanes to cause upset

Rippa Staff 8 Jan 2018

A Chris Lynn-less Brisbane Heat face a Hobart Hurricanes side, which is on a roll with three wins on the trot and knocking the doors of top-four.

The clash at the Gabba on Wednesday night, January 10 will be an interesting one, considering the tight race to the finals.

Match Preview

The Heat have eight points from six games (W4, L2) and are firmly in the race for top-four. They are on a two-match winning run coming into this contest and will be confident of a big batting flourish. But, they will have to make do without Lynn, who is out with a shoulder injury.

In T20 cricket, it’s all about momentum and the Hurricanes have that in abundance! After starting the season with two losses, they won the next three and have six points in their kitty. The race to the top-four is in their hands and the Hurricanes would like to make sure they are in the mix.

These sides have ten times in the Big Bash, with the Hurricanes having a 6-4 edge. The last seven encounters have a distinct Hurricanes’ flavour with the side maintaining a 5-2 dominance. At the Gabba, these two sides have three wins each.

Match Significance

The Heat are entering that phase where they traditionally struggle – playing without Lynn. However, this is their chance to prove that they don’t unravel around Lynn’s absence. Moreover, a win will give them the comfort of staying in the top three. A loss would mean that with only three more games left in the season, at least two wins would be required for qualification.

The Hurricanes need a win to keep their momentum and their surge towards top-four. With the teams at the top so close to each other, a win would be crucial for the visitors. And, guess what, this is that proverbial six-pointer because a win could potentially get Hurricanes replace the Heat in the top-four.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

The pair of Brendon McCullum (158 runs, SR of 143.63) and Joe Burns (150 runs, SR of 145.63) are leading the charge for the Heat. Their worry is the bowling of Ben Cutting (two wickets, economy of 10.33) although his batting form (116 runs, SR of 168.11) has been exemplary! The Heat need ‘Cutting the bowler’ to help Yasir Shah (four wickets, economy of 5.08).

The Hurricanes’ storm is led by the aggression of D’Arcy Short (284 runs, SR of 153.51) whose form coincided with the team’s surge. With the ball, it is the exciting quick Jofra Archer (eight wickets, economy of 6.60) who is leading the charts. Worries? Well, the slumping numbers of Dan Christian (68 runs, two wickets at an economy of 9.85) are a concern.

Tips and Predictions

This will be an even contest with very little to separate the sides. But, the Hurricanes may just edge out their hosts. Back the Hurricanes to win at odds of $2.35 (Sportsbet).

Short’s form and consistency mean that he looks a good pick in the runs market. Back Short to score at least 26 runs at odds of $1.83 (Ladbrokes).
