Adelaide Strikers v Perth Scorchers Big Bash League Preview and Predictions - Rivals clash in Alice Springs

Rippa Staff 11 Jan 2018
  • Both sides have 10 points at the top of the ladder
  • The two sides have shared 5 wins each in head to heads

The race for BBL07 finals qualification is getting closer by the day, increasing the prospects of closer matches, and Adelaide Scorchers and Perth Scorchers meet in a top-of-the-table clash will be played at Alice Springs on Saturday, January 13.

With the Strikers and the Scorchers setting the tone for the rest of the teams, their clash is sure to bring a lot of excitement as Big Bash moves into regional venues to help grow the cricket nationally.

Coming as it does at such a crucial stage, there couldn’t have been a better time for Alice Springs to get on the Big Bash map.

Match Preview

The Strikers have surprised everyone with their form this season, bagging five wins in their six matches so far. Only an in-form Hobart Hurricanes side could stop them this year. They have ten points and are currently top of the table (ahead of the Melbourne Derby on Friday night).

The Scorchers are the defending champions and have continued their consistency this season. They also have ten points, but have played one game more than their hosts. Their losses have come against the Heat and then the Thunder on Thursday night.

If you must pick one game that is closely fought over the seasons in Big Bash, it would be this. Both sides have shared the spoils in ten encounters so far. Only once in the history did a side win back-to-back contests in this match-up. That tells a lot about how close these sides have been.

Match Significance

With the table looking clustered at the top, neither team can take their qualification for the finals for granted. For the Strikers, there is a bit of comfort with the extra game in hand over the Scorchers.

For the Scorchers, a loss would signal a chance for the trio (Renegades, Heat, Hurricanes) to leapfrog them in the race to the finals.

Squad Changes

The Strikers lose their captain Travis Head, which means Colin Ingram will take up the skipper duties. To be fair, the Strikers aren’t hugely affected in terms of personnel because of the international ODI commitments.

The Scorchers have already got Cameron Bancroft in their side and Shaun Marsh is also expected to play, after sitting out the loss to the Thunder. Tim Bresnan is another addition.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

For the Strikers, Alex Carey (224 runs) continues to be their batting lynchpin, while Rashid Khan and Ben Laughlin (both 11 wickets) are setting the pace with the ball. The worry, though, is the economy rate of Laughlin (8.95) and Michael Neser (8.55).

The Scorchers have always relied on multiple performers and that’s the case this season as well. Ashton Turner (199 runs) and Hilton Cartwright (179 runs) are leading their batting charts. The worry is with the ball as the absence of Andrew Tye (16 wickets) and David Willey (seven wickets) is sure to be a blow.

Tips and Predictions

It is easy to pick the Strikers to win this game considering their run of form. However, the Scorchers must be reeling after the narrow loss against the Thunder. Time for revenge? Back the Scorchers to win at odds of $2.25 (Ladbrokes).

The Scorchers should also edge out their counterparts in finding the maximums. Back the Scorchers to score the most sixes at odds of $2.40 (Sportsbet).
