Adelaide Strikers v Melbourne Stars Big Bash League Preview and Predictions - Stars chase first win

Rippa Staff 8 Jan 2018

Adelaide Strikers are one of the top performers in BBL07 at this stage of the tournament, while the Melbourne Stars are struggling at the wrong end of the ladder.

The contrast between these sides is evident in the table as they remain at opposite ends of the table – before the Monday clashes. So, when they meet, what can be expected? Will this be a run-of-the-mill encounter, or will there be a surprise? The Adelaide Oval will provide all the answers on Tuesday, January 9.

Match Preview

The Strikers have eight points from five games (W4, L1) and are in a group of four sides that are clustered together at the top. They have the best net run rate (NRR) of these four, which is an apt reflection of the way they have played so far. Their only loss, so far, has been to a rampant Hobart Hurricanes side. That loss too, was a narrow one, and something the Strikers can consider as an aberration.

The Stars are the polar opposite and have lost all their four matches so far. Not just that, their NRR is the worst of the lot, which means they need to pick up wins and pick them up convincingly. The worry, though, is that they have not looked capable of a turn around.

The Stars have a 4-2 record against the Strikers, but the Strikers have been the dominant team in the past three years (two wins out of three). More importantly, the Strikers have a 2-1 advantage in the matches played at the Adelaide Oval.

Match Significance

The Strikers are in a good zone right now, but with things so tight at the top they would want to continue their winning run. A loss is not catastrophic for them, but the way they managed this season puts a win as the more probable event.

For the Stars, it is a do-or-die moment. They wouldn’t want to go five matches in this season without a win. Going back to BBL06, where they lost their last three matches on the trot, the Stars now have lost seven matches in the Big Bash.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

Rashid Khan was tipped to be one of the bowlers to watch from the Strikers’ stable in this edition and he didn’t disappoint. Figures of 2/22, 2/22, 2/19, 2/18, and 2/21 make him one of the most consistent. And, he bowls at both ends of the innings, which makes his record even more credible.

Glenn Maxwell is a distraught man after getting snubbed in the Australian ODI selection. He channelled his anger in the last two matches by scoring 83 runs, while his first two matches yielded just 12.

To pick who’s not performing from either side is a tough task – from the Strikers side, it is tough because all of them are performing, while from the Stars side everyone is under-performing.

Tips and Predictions

It will take a miracle for the Stars to make a huge differential to their performance. We are backing the Strikers to continue their run at odds of $1.77 (Neds)

The Stars, though, may have the final say when it comes to the powerplay. Back the Stars to score more in the first six overs at odds of $2.00 (Ladbrokes).

The Stars may have the firepower, but the Strikers may edge them out in the race to more maximums. Back the Strikers to score the most sixes at odds of $1.91 (Sportsbet).
