Western Bulldogs vs Brisbane Lions Match Preview and Predictions - Can the Dogs win again?

Rippa Staff 11 May 2018
  • Preview and predictions for the Round 8 clash between the Bulldogs and the Lions

The Western Bulldogs host the winless Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium on Saturday May 12 at 7:35pm (AEST).

All the action can be seen live on Fox Sports 3 from 7:20pm.

Match Preview

The Western Bulldogs are one of the most interesting teams in the competition at this stage of the season. After Seven rounds, we know where most teams stand as the ladder is starting to take shape.

The Dogs however, are still a mystery. They sit with a 3-4 record after a horror first two weeks, but have still only beaten the Bombers, Blues and Suns. They now face the 0-7 Brisbane Lions at home.

The Dogs have struggled to score so far in 2018, they have averaged only 74 points per game which is 15th in the league and have broken the 100 point barrier only once this season.

Despite scoring 114 points against the Pies on Sunday Night, the Brisbane Lions still sit in 16th in the league for scoring average. The Lions have averaged only 70 points per game in 2018. This average wasn’t helped by their two-goal horror show against the Tigers at the MCG four weeks ago.

The Brisbane Lions have fallen to 0-7 for the first time since 2011. Although things look bleak for the Lions, they are showing some positive signs. They could easily be 3-4 after seven rounds, with one-kick losses against Port Adelaide, Gold Coast and Collingwood.

Team News

The Western Bulldogs injury list continues to grow by the day. The main concern for this week is Marcus Bontempelli. The Bont missed the Dogs win over the Suns with a hip injury and will need to pass a fitness test to play this week against the Brisbane Lions.

Stats

The Western Bulldogs have had no trouble scoring against the Lions in recent years. In their last five encounters, the Dogs are averaging 122.6 points against the Lions who are only averaging 90 points in those same matches.

It comes as no surprise that the Dogs have dominated recent matches against the Lions. They have won four of the last five, and the last three at Etihad Stadium by an average of 52 points.

Prediction and Tips

The Bulldogs face the winless Lions in Melbourne, a place where Brisbane have often struggles. This line looks low to me, and I'm happy to be with the Western Bulldogs.
