West Coast Eagles v Gold Coast Suns Match Preview and Predictions - The Travelling Suns move West

Rippa Staff 13 Apr 2018
  • The West Coast Eagles take on the Gold Coast Suns in Round 4
  • The Eagles have dominated the Suns in Perth

The West Coast Eagles host the Gold Coast Suns at Optus Stadium on Saturday April 14. The Eagles will try and make it back-to-back victories at their new home ground on Saturday Night.

All the action can be seen on Fox Sports 3 from 8:00pm (AEST) with the action kicking off shortly after.

Match Preview

Unexpectedly, both the West Coast Eagles and Gold Coast Suns sit inside the top 8 with 2-1 records after the first three rounds.

The Eagles have responded well after there round 1 loss to Sydney. They have shown terrific signs for their supporters, with a 51-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium and a stirring 15-point victory over Geelong.

The Eagles notched their first win at the new Optus Stadium in a crazy match against Geelong. The Eagles seemingly had full control at half-time, leading by 32 points. The Cats came into the third quarter a different team, kicking six goals to none in the third quarter.

When The Cats kicked two of the first three goals in the last quarter, it looked like they were going to run over the top of the Eagles who looked spent. In a game of momentum, the Eagles found another gear, kicking six goals in 10 minutes and willing themselves to a victory.

Dom Sheed led the way for the Eagles, gathering 30 disposals and kicking two goals. Nic Naitanui dominated the ruck while young Liam Ryan proved influential again, kicking three goals from his 14 touches.

The Gold Coast Suns have notched up plenty of miles in the first three rounds, travelling from Cairns in round one, to Melbourne and then to Perth. The Suns have embraced this ‘back to the wall’ mentality and are playing a great brand of footy.

Tom Lynch was huge for the Suns in Round 2 against Carlton at Etihad. The Suns finished with a 34-point victory and never trailed against the struggling Blues. Lynch booted eight goals in the victory.

Team News

The Gold Coast Suns will be without Pearce Hanley who re-injured his troublesome shoulder late in the first half against Fremantle. Hanley will need surgery on the Shoulder, but there is no timeline on his return.

The Eagles may welcome back gun forward Josh Kennedy this week after he announced he’s ‘Ready To Go’. It’s been a bittersweet week for the Eagles, who lose young star Liam Ryan for 10-12 weeks after he injured his ankle while kicking his third goal against the Cats.

Stats

The Gold Coast Suns record in Perth has been awful. The Suns have never beaten the Eagles in Perth and have beaten the Dockers only once, back in 2016.

The Eagles dominated the Suns at Subiaco. The Eagles beat them by 77 points in Round 10, 2016 and by 92 points in Round 7, 2015.

The Suns don’t look to have improved at Optus Stadium, losing to Fremantle by 28 points last week.

Prediction and Tips

The West Coast Eagles have dominated the Suns and should be winning again, however the line looks spot on at -35.5. With Kennedy likely to return this week, I’m taking the West Coast Eagles over their point line.
