Melbourne Demons v Collingwood Match Preview and Predictions - All set for Queen's Birthday blockbuster at the MCG

Adam Cusworth 8 Jun 2018
  • Melbourne and Collingwood have been in excellent form over the past six weeks. Here is our preview of the key match up.

The AFL action heads to the MCG on Queen's Birthday, Monday June 10, for the traditional clash between Melbourne and Collingwood.

The Round 12 encounter gets underway at 3.20PM and it is the Demons that have ben posted as favourites in the early head to head betting. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game.

Match Preview

Melbourne are producing their best form in well over a decade, winning their past six matches and are on track for their first finals birth since 2006. The Demons sit in 3rd position on the ladder and have won eight of their 11 games this season.

Collingwood have also improved on their output this season and have won seven of their 11 games. They sit in 7th position on the ladder and have won three on the trot.

With both sides in terrific form, we can expect a crowd of over 80000 fans at the MCG, a day that is also highlighted by 'the big freeze' a fundraiser for research into the debilitating Motor Neurone Disease.

The Magpies are no stranger to large crowds and come off a 61 point win at the venue over Fremantle. On the same weekend, Melbourne ran out 49 point winners over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad.

The Demons have a host of players in terrific form. Angus Brayshaw has been electric in the last few weeks and is one player the Pies will need to stop, while Clayton Oliver and Nathan Jones are ones that have also been finding plenty of the footy.

Melbourne rank No.2 for total disposals and clearances and are on top for contested possessions and hitouts. Interestingly, Collingwood are on top for total disposals but slightly lower than Melbourne in the other three measures.

There will be plenty of key battles in the midfield with Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar and Steele Sidebottom going head to head with the likes of Brayshaw and Oliver. Another highlight will be in the ruck, where two of the competition's best big men, Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy, line up on each other.

The result may come down to the side that makes the most of their opportunities. Collingwood have had a number of contributors up forward. Last weekend it was Will Hoskin Elliot that bobbed up with six goals, while at Melbourne, Jesse Hogan, Tom McDonald and Jake Melksham have found the scoreboard at regular times this year.

Team News

Melbourne's big name recruit, Jake Lever, is gone for the year with an ACL injury. Sam Frost and Joel Smith are among those that could replace the former Crow.

Collingwood have a massive injury list. Of those that are currently on the sidelines, Jeremy Howe and Ben Reid are some chance of returning.

Stats

Melbourne have won three of their past four against Collingwood. They claimed the 2017 Queens Birthday clash by four points, but went down to the Magpies by 16 in Round 23, a loss that would cost them a spot in the eight.

In that encounter, Tom Phillips, Will Hoskin-Elliot and Steele Sidebottom were among the major contributors for the Magpies, while Clayton Oliver and Nathan Jones were among Melbourne's best.

Prediction and Tips

This shapes as an absolute beauty. The Lever injury throws a few question marks around Melbourne's set up and it will be interesting to see how they adapt. The Dees haven't really been tested in recent weeks but their form is hard to ignore.
