Collingwood v Hawthorn Hawks Tips and Predictions - Magpies to account for injury depleted Hawks

Adam Cusworth 17 May 2017
  • Hawthorn have a superior win-loss record but head in as underdogs
  • Magpies last win over Hawks was in the 2011 Preliminary Final
  • Who comes in for Rioli, Stratton and Frawley?

One of the big games of AFL Round 9 will be when Collingwood take on Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday night and there is plenty at stake as we head to the middle stages of the season.

Both sides need a win to keep their fading finals hopes alive and the action gets underway at 7.25PM. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game, while AFL Live Vision is also available to ALL CrownBet members. Every Match, wherever you are.

Match Preview

Collingwood come off a narrow loss against the competition pacesetters, GWS, last weekend by three points. Nathan Buckley's side has a win-loss record of 2-6 and are highly unlikely to make the eight in season 2017.

On the same day, Hawthorn made it three wins from four games with a comfortable 38 point win over Brisbane but the victory came at a cost with champion forward Cyril Rioli going down with a knee injury, while Ben Stratton also pulled up with issues.

The Hawks enter in as slight underdogs in the early head to head betting with CrownBet and will need a win to stay in touch with the top eight.

Tom Mitchell shapes as a key player for the brown and gold and the former Sydney player leads the competition for total disposals this season. He comes off another 36 touches in the win over the Lions and was ably supported by Billy Hartung (26) and Liam Shiels (25).

In the middle of the ground, however, Collingwood seem to have more depth and are enjoying solid seasons from Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar and Taylor Adams. That trio sit in the top 25 for average possessions, while the only Hawk in the top 50 is Mitchell, who leads the comp for total disposals.

The Magpies are ranked 6th in the competition for disposals, contested possession and clearances, while Hawthorn are 12th, 16th and 15th in these measures.

Hawthorn have generally had the better ball use, particularly over the last month and are 3rd in the competition for disposal efficiency, while the Magpies are 14th.

If the Pies can hit their targets with consistency they should account for the Hawks but that has been an issue for Buckley and his troops, particularly in their losses this year.

Team News

Collingwood will be sweating on the fitness of Adam Treloar as the classy midfielder faces a fitness test, while Ben Reid is out with yet another soft tissue injury. Mason Cox, Chris Mayne and Matt Scharenberg are among the possible inclusions.

Hawthorn are in the midst of an injury crisis. Cyril Rioli will miss after hurting his knee last weekend, joining fellow premiership player, Ben Stratton, on the sidelines. James Frawley will also be out, while Jack Fitzpatrick is in doubt. Jaegar O'Meara and Grant Birchall are both some time away. Ryan Schoenmakers, Ty Vickery, Kaiden Brand and Kade Stewart are all possible inclusions.

Hawthorn have not lost to Collingwood since the 2011 Preliminary Final. Since that night, the Hawks have won nine in a row against the Pies with those wins coming at an average margin of 28 points.

The last game between the two sides was in Round 23 last season and on that occasion it was a one point win for the brown and gold, with Jack Fitzpatrick the unlikely hero after kicking the matchwinning goal late in the game.
