Geelong Cats v St Kilda Saints Match Preview and Predictions - A season-defining match for both Clubs

Rippa Staff 14 Apr 2018
  • Preview and predictions for the Round 4 clash between the Cats and the Saints

The Geelong Cats take on the St Kilda Saints at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday, April 15. This match is the late game on Sunday Afternoon and gets underway at 4:40pm (AEST).

It’s a crucial match for both Geelong and St Kilda. Both teams had finals expectations and find themselves 1-2 coming into this Round 4 matchup. All the action can be seen on Fox Footy from 4:30pm.

Match Preview

Geelong has been less than impressive so far this season. It started with a narrow three-point victory over Melbourne in Round 1, thanks to a late Max Gawn miss. That narrow victory was followed by a narrow loss on Easter Monday.

The Cats found themselves four goals down in the final term against modern day foes Hawthorn. They fought back to level the scores with just three minutes remaining, but a late Jarryd Roughead behind gave Hawthorn a one-point victory.

The Cats travelled to Optus Stadium to play the West Coast Eagles in Round 3. The Cats displayed a horrid brand of football in the first half, making basic skill errors while letting the Eagles do whatever they pleased.

The Eagles seemingly had full control at half-time, leading by 32 points. The Cats came into the third quarter a different team, kicking six goals to none in the third quarter.

When The Cats kicked two of the first three goals in the last quarter, it looked like they were going to run over the top of the Eagles who looked spent. In a game of momentum, the Eagles found another gear, kicking six goals in 10 minutes and willing themselves to a victory.

St Kilda came into the 2018 season with serious finals expectations. Head coach Alan Richardson had built a solid list with a good game plan. The Saints started their season with a victory over the gritty Brisbane Lions.

What has followed has been disgraceful for a team pushing for finals. The Saints played probably the worst match of football I’ve seen from an established team.

The Saints were expected to run over North Melbourne on Good Friday but that was not the case. They kicked only five goals as North Melbourne won by 52 points. The Saints won the disposal count 372 to 364, however, lost the Inside 50 count 66 to 41.

Round 3 featured another heavy loss for the Saints, this time losing at home against the Adelaide Crows by 49 points. The Saints were in the contest at halftime, but slipped away after the main break, allowing the Crows to kick 10 goals to four in the second half.

Team News

Geelong has been hit hard with injuries. Cam Guthrie suffered a nasty ankle injury in the second quarter against West Coast. It’s expected he will miss 8-9 weeks. Another blow for the Cats as prodigal son Gary Ablett won’t be returning to play in Geelong this week. Ablett injured his hamstring in the final quarter last week and will miss 3-6 weeks. Mitch Duncan is likely to play against the Saints which is good news for the Cats, however, they are still missing Harry Taylor.

Stats

Geelong has dominated St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium in recent years. The Cats average winning margin at home against the Saints is 97.5 points since 2013. The Saints haven’t won in Geelong this century, with their last win coming in 1999.

The last match between the two teams was in Round 5, 2017. This was a St Kilda home game at Etihad Stadium. The Cats were far too good on this occasion, winning by 38 points.

Prediction and Tips

The Cats will be desperate for this victory and with the match down in Geelong, they should score their second win of the season.
