Round 9 of the AFL season concludes when the Fremantle Dockers take on Carlton at Domain Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Match Preview

Fremantle come off a stunning victory against Richmond last weekend. All looked gone for the Dockers after Richmond hit the front with 20 seconds left but Ross Lyon's side were able to get the ball out of the middle to David Mundy, who duly converted after the siren.

The win continued a solid recent run for the Dockers, who are back in winning form after a poor 2016 campaign.

On the same weekend, Carlton went down to St Kilda by 19 points. That effort ended a two match winning streak for the Blues, who have won three from eight this season.

They travel over to Perth with one of the worst interstate records in the completion, having won just one of their past 17 starts outside of Victoria. Interestingly, the lone win they had was against Fremantle at Domain Stadium just over a year ago.

Brendan Bolton's side head in as underdogs for this clash but were good for most of the game against St Kilda and will be no pushovers. The developing side will need to keep their composure in the key moments, while they will also have to get off to a good start if they are to match Freo.

Both sides compare similarly in a number of areas with little separating them in the disposal count this year, as well as scoring. However, the Dockers are the better clearance side and rank 8th in this area compared to the Blues, who are 18th.

Freo should also gain the ascendancy in the ruck as they lead the competition for hitouts, while the Blues are 14th in this category. Look for Aaron Sandilands to set up the likes of Lachie Neale and Nathan Fyfe.

A win for the home side should catapult them from 9th and inside the top eight, great improvement considering their woes last year, while it is also a solid platform from which to launch in the second half of the year.

For Carlton, the Blues can stay in touch with a victory. But given their form on the road, the task at hand may be a bit beyond them

Team News

Fremantle have few injury concerns and are unlikely to make too many changes. Tom Sheridan, Luke Ryan and Griffin Logue have solid form in the WAFL. Carlton have just one player on their injury list, Ciaran Byrne. A host of players have form in the VFL including Liam Jones and Dennis Armfield.

Fremantle have won three of the past four against Carlton but it was the Blues that saluted the last time they met after the much maligned Liam Jones kicked the winning goal with a minute left on the clock to steer his side home by four points.

Prediction and Tips

The Dockers will be too strong.
