Essendon v Collingwood Predictions and Match Preview - Magpies to take another step towards September

Adam Cusworth 6 Jul 2018
  • Essendon and Collingwood clash in what should be a huge clash at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. Here is our preview of the Round 16 affair

One of the big games of AFL Round 16 will be when the competition's two big rivals, Essendon and Collingwood, square off at the MCG on Sunday July 8 at the MCG.

The Magpies head in as slight favourites for the ladder shaping clash and the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Sports.

Match Preview

Collingwood have been on a roll in recent times and now sit in 2nd position on the ladder. The Magpies have now won their past six and are set to make their first finals series since 2013. They come off a 39 point win over the Gold Coast Suns.

On the same weekend, Essendon defeated North Melbourne by 17 points in what was a high scoring affair at Etihad Stadium. The Bombers  have also been in excellent touch of late, winning five of their past six and are making a late challenge for September. They are one game out of the eight and are in 12th spot.

After finishing 13th in 2017, Collingwood have charged to become a contender on the back of some superb work by their new look forward line. Will Hoskin-Elliot, Jaiydn Stephenson and Josh Thomas find themselves in the top 15 of the competition for goals scored and it is the electrifying pace that the Magpies have displayed inside the 50m arc that has worried opposition sides.

Familiar names in Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and Taylor Adams are also in  good form in the midfield, while Brodie Grundy is arguably the games best ruckman at the moment. The Pies rank highly in a number of statistical measures, including disposals, contested possessions, clearances and hitouts.

Look for them to get on top in the middle of the ground. Essendon's Tom Bellchambers, Dyson Heppell and Zach Merrett will need to be at their best, while the Bombers can trouble Collingwood with their run and carry. It will be interesting to see if their big name recruits- Jake Stringer, Adam Saad and Devon Smith can continue their fine form.

A win for the Dons will see them well and truly back in contention with seven games to follow, while a loss will make it tough. For Collingwood, a win will see them take another step towards a top four birth but a loss puts them back with the charging brigade.

Team News

Essendon are unlikely to make too many changes to their lineup and have no fresh injury concerns. Kobe Mutch and Jackson Merrett are among those wiht good form in the VFL.

Collingwood lose another player to a long term injury with Lynden Dunn (ACL) joining the likes of Adam Treloar and Daniel Wells on the sidelines. Darcy Moore is a candidate to replace Dunn but is likely to make his way back via the VFL.

Stats

Collingwood were far too good for Essendon earlier this year, winning the Anzac Day clash by 49 points. Adam Treloar and Brodie Grundy were the stars for the Pies that day, while David Zaharakis and Brendon Goddard were among the Dons best.

Little has separated the two sides in recent years with each winning five of the past 10 games. This is the best placed that Collingwood has been at this time of the season. In the corresponding game last year, the then finals bound Essendon won by 37 points.

Prediction and Tips

Although the injuries are starting to pile up, Collingwood should have too many answers for Essendon, particularly in the middle of the ground and up forward.
