Collingwood v Geelong Cats Match Preview and Predictions - Collingwood to claim the points in Sunday afternoon footy

  • Preview of the big Sunday afternoon clash between the Magpies and the Cats at the MCG

One of the key games of AFL Round 8 will be when Collingwood take on Geelong at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides are evenly poised on the ladder and the action gets underway at 3.20PM. Channel 7 and Fox Footy will broadcast the game live.

Match Preview

Collingwood come off a narrow win over the Brisbane Lions last weekend by seven points and have won four of their past five. Their only loss in that time period was at the hands of the competition's pacesetters, Richmond.

They now sit with an overall win-loss record of 4-3, which is the same as Geelong but the Pies are three slots below the 6th placed Cats on the ladder, due to an inferior percentage.

Geelong were comprehensive 63 point winners over GWS last weekend and head in as slight favourites for the MCG encounter. Their A-grade midfield has been in solid form this year and will be bolstered by the likely return of Gary Ablett.

The battle in that part of the ground will be an interesting one. Collingwood top the competition for total disposals and just shade Geelong for average number of contested possessions and clearances.

It will also be interesting to see if the Pies can continue their form on the scoreboard. Their rejuvenated forward line has managed to boot over 100 points in three of the past four games. Jordan De Goey, Jaiydn Stephenson and Josh Thomas have all kicked bags in recent times.

Team News

Scott Pendlebury is in some doubt for Collingwood after hurting his ankle in the narrow win over Brisbane. Callum Brown, Daniel Wells and Tom Langdon are among those that could come in.

Geelong are set to regain Gary Ablett from injury, while Daniel Melzel is also a chance to return. Tom Hawkins will miss after copping a one game suspension by the match review panel for touching an umpire.

Stats

Collingwood have won three of the past four against Geelong but went down the last time the two sides met, which was in Round 22 last year. On that occasion, Patrick Dangerfield and Mitch Duncan starred for the Cats, while Taylor Adams and Adam Treloar were among the Magpies best.

Earlier in the year in Round 6, it was an upset 29 point win for Collingwood. Both of those games were held at the MCG.

Prediction and Tips

Collingwood represent value in the head to head betting and are right in this contest.
