Adam Cusworth 14 Jul 2017
  • Bulldogs have lost four of past five
  • Carlton went down narrowly to Melbourne last weekend
  • Game gets underway at 3.20PM on Sunday

Sunday AFL action sees Carlton play host to the Western Bulldogs and the MCG encounter should be full of intrigue, as the premiers from last year, the Bulldogs, look to turn things around.

The result of the 3.20PM encounter will have plenty of ramifications for both sides and the action can be seen on Channel 7 and Fox Footy, while AFL Live Vision is also available to ALL CrownBet members. Every Match, wherever you are.

Match Preview

What a fall it has been for the Western Bulldogs. After opening the season in encouraging fashion, the wheels have fallen off and they have lost four of their past five games. Their only win in that time period was by a solitary point over lowlyNorth Melbourne.

Luke Beveridge's side currently occupy 11th spot on the ladder and are in grave danger of missing the finals. They desperately need a win, not only to stay in touch, but to boost their sapping confidence. Last weekend they were no match for Adelaide and booted just five goals for the game in going down to the ladder leaders by 59 points.

Their opponents for Sunday, Carlton, are in 16th spot with five wins. Although they have dropped their past three matches, they should measure up well against the Bulldogs.

Last weekend they went down to Melbourne by eight points but were a tad unlucky as they lost Patrick Cripps and Simon White to injuries during the game.

Brendan Bolton's side have been pretty good defensively throughout 2017 and will restrict the Bulldogs, who will need to find better avenue's to goal. The Doggies will also need a lift from a host of players, including Jason Johannisen, Jake Stringer and Tom Liberatore, who have all been quiet in recent times.

For Carlton, look for Matthew Kruezer to have some influence in the ruck, while Bryce Gibbs and Marc Murphy should find plenty of the footy. If the young Blues forwards can maintain their composure and capitalize, an upset win is within their grasp.

Team News

Patrick Cripps will miss for Carlton after injuring his calf last weekend, while Simon White is also in some doubt for the Blues. The Western Bulldogs have a number of underperforming players.

Tom Liberatore and Caleb Daniel are among some big names that could face the axe. Travis Cloke and Tory Dickson booted three goals apiece in the VFL and may come back in.

Stats

The Western Bulldogs have won the past two games against Carlton but the two sides have not met since Round 4 last year.

On that occasion it was a 36-point victory for the Doggies with Lachie Hunter and Shane Biggs finding plenty of the footy, while Marcus Bontempelli booted three goals. Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps were among Carlton's best.

The two sides have not met at the MCG since 2007 and on that occasion it was the Blues by 10 points.

Prediction and Tips

The loss of Cripps hurts Carlton but the Dogs are doing little to inspire at the moment. Back the Blues to cause the upset.
