Match Preview

Despite sticking in their for most of the game last week, Brisbane Lions were overrun by Hawthorn in their 38-point loss in Launceston.

The Lions were trailing by just 15 points at the main break before Hawthorn just kept kicking further and further ahead and it stretched their losing streak over Hawthorn to eight games with their last win back in Round 12 of 2009.

Stefan Martin was influential in the ruck for the Lions with 63 hit-outs and 10 tackles. Lions key players also played well with Tom Rockliff recording 30 possessions, 13 tackles and a goal whilst Dayne Zorko picked up 31 disposals and 11 tackles.

After such an impressive start to the season, Adelaide have dropped back-to-back games after Melbourne Demons secured a surprise 41-point win at Adelaide Oval. Adelaide leaked nine unanswered goals between the second and third terms against the Demons.

Rory Laird had a game-high 37 possessions while Sam Jacobs won the ruck with 74 hit-outs. Eddie Betts and Rory Sloane will be looking to bounce back after poor showings.

Team News

Brisbane are bolstered by the return of skipper Dayne Beams. No.3 draft pick Hugh McCluggage is also back after being rested for a week, while Matthew Hammelmann is also named. The bad news is the Lions will be without vice-captain Tom Rockliff with the midfielder set to miss a few weeks with a dislocated shoulder. Rohan Bewick and Josh Schache are left out.

Defender Jake Lever returns for the Crows, who name Jordan Gallucci and Hugh Greenwood for the first time. Troy Menzel misses out through injury, while Josh Jenkins and David Mackay are not in the squad.

Stats

Adelaide holds a dominating record over the Lions lately, winning the past five games and six of the past seven, including the last two by a combined 225 points. Three of the last four have been decided by more than 80 points.

The Lions are yet to win at the Gabba in 2017, losing all three games, and have lost 12 of their past 14. The Crows have won their past seven games in Queensland, and haven’t lost in the Sunshine State since 2012.
