There have been plenty of exciting contests in the recent weeks of the AFL home and away season and shapes as another crucial weekend with plenty of interest in a number of games.

With finals positions on the line, one of the big highlights will be the Saturday afternoon blockbuster at the MCG between Hawthorn and Geelong. The rivals of the modern era featured in a couple of the thrilling games from Round 20 with Hawthorn defeating Essendon by four points, while Geelong were on the receiving end in their clash against Richmond, going down by three.

The Hawks now sit in 5th position on the ladder and are in sight of a top four spot, while Geelong have been squeezed out of the eight. However, just one win separates the two sides and those position's should change significantly, particularly if the Cats get up.

Geelong have been posted as the $1.75 favourites in the early head to head betting with CrownBet and the action gets underway at 1.45PM.

Another key fixture is the Port Adelaide and West Coast Eagles game at the Adelaide Oval, which follows the Hawks Cats clash at 4.35PM AEST. The Power went down in controversial fashion to Adelaide by three points in Round 20 and are now 7th on the ladder. They face the 2nd placed Eagles, who can stitch up their spot in the top four with a victory.

The weekend kicks off on Friday night when Essendon take on St Kilda at Etihad Stadium. The Bombers are all but out of calculations after their loss to Hawthorn last weekend but should pick up the points in this one.

One side that shouldn't have too many difficulties registering a victory is Richmond. The Tigers take on the struggling Gold Coast Suns on Saturday at 2.10PM and that clash will be held at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Saturday night footy sees Collingwood take on the Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium, while the GWS Giants host the Adelaide Crows at UNSW Stadium in Canberra.

Both of these contests will have some bearing on the makeup of the eight. Collingwood can ill afford another slip up after their loss to Sydney by two points last weekend. GWS, who have won eight of their past nine, can hold their standing in 3rd spot if they can hold out the Crows.

There are three games in store for Sunday and the first of those sees North Melbourne take on the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium. The Kangaroos remain in the hunt after holding on against Brisbane last weekend and will jump as favourites in this.

Across town at the MCG it is Melbourne that play host to the Sydney Swans in what should be a pivotal game for both sides, who have a tough couple of weeks to follow. They are currently 4th and 8th on the ladder but are equal on points. A loss will have big ramifications for either side.

The action closes out with the Fremantle Dockers and Carlton encounter at Perth Stadium. Both sides are out of the hunt and are playing for pride.
