AFL Round 19 Fixtures and Preview - Countdown towards finals gathers pace

  • Hawthorn and Sydney feature in Friday night footy
  • Dogs and Dons feature in 'eight point game'
  • Crunch time for St Kilda

Round 19 of the AFL home and away season kicks off with what should be another fascinating chapter in the rivalry of two of the most successful clubs in recent times in Hawthorn and Sydney.

The 2014 Grand Finalists endured slow starts to season 2017 but have been in terrific form in recent times, particularly the Swans, who have won 10 of their past 11 games.

They take on their conquerors from 2014, who are the only side to defeat them since Round 6. The Hawks come off a big win on the road over Fremantle and enjoy the home ground advantage, however, it is Sydney that have been posted as the $1.45 favourites with CrownBet in the head to head betting.

John Longmire's side can potentially squeeze into the top four by the end of the weekend if other results go their way. Hawthorn can ill afford to drop another game in their unlikely quest to sneak into the top eight later on.

On Saturday, there are five intriguing games in store and it is North Melbourne and Melbourne that kick off proceedings when they square off at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.

The 7th placed Demons head in as favourites for this one but the Kangaroos have some solid form at the venue in recent times and it is a danger game for the red and blue.

In Sydney, GWS will be looking to rejoin the winners list for the first time in over a month when they play host to Fremantle at Spotless Stadium. The Giants lost their Round 17 clash to Richmond but should have too much class for a sloppy Dockers outfit.

Following this match, Port Adelaide take on St Kilda in what is a massive game for both sides, who come off disappointing losses last weekend. Just one game separates the 5th placed Power and the 11th placed Saints and the four points are vital, with just five matches remaining after the round.

On Saturday night it is the Gold Coast Suns that take on Richmond, while Carlton face Geelong at Etihad Stadium. Expect the Tigers and the Cats to claim victories here.

One of the most intriguing games of Round 19 will be when Essendon and the Western Bulldogs clash at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The 1.10PM encounter pits the 8th placed Bombers up against the Doggies, who are 9th, and the winner will find themselves inside the eight at the conclusion of the weekend. The Dons have been posted as $1.78 favourites in a tight betting market.

Across town at the MCG, Collingwood face the Adelaide Crows and the South Australian outfit should further cement their stranglehold on top spot with a victory at the home of footy.

The final game of Round 19 will be in Perth, where the West Coast Eagles take on Brisbane. The Lions come off a big win last weekend, but a repeat performance would surprise.
