AFL Draft Wrap: Your club's selections and all the ins and outs from the AFL Draft

Adam Cusworth 27 Nov 2017
  • The No.1 pick Cameron Rayner heads to Brisbane
  • Collingwood take a punt
  • Tigers land a son of a gun

The Brisbane Lions have drafted the explosive Victorian midfielder, Cameron Rayner, with the first pick in the 2017 AFL draft.

The former Hillside player produced a stellar season for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup and has been compared to Richmond's superstar, Dustin Martin, due to his strength in the clinches, as well as his ability to push forward and snag a goal.

The Lions, who finished on the bottom of the ladder in 2017, had three picks inside the top 20 and boosted their midfield credentials by recruiting Zac Bailey (18) and Brandon Starcevich.

In other highlights;

- Collingwood took a punt by selecting the goal-kicking midfielder, Jaidyn Stephenson at pick 6. The Eastern Ranges product was ruled out by other clubs’ due to concerns about a genetic heart issue.

- Paddy Dow (pick 3), as well as Lochie O'Brien (pick 10), join Carlton's ever-growing batch of young guns and should add plenty of depth to the Blues midfield.

- The Fremantle Dockers made the most of their strong hand by selecting Andrew Bradshaw (pick 2) and Adam Cerra (pick 5). The Victorian, Brayshaw, will be joined in W.A by his brother, Hamish, who went to the West Coast Eagles

- Hawthorn and Essendon did not enter the draft until late. The Bombers selected Jordan Houlahan with pick 49 and the Hawks snared Vic Country co-captain, James Worpel, at 71.

- Geelong landed what most experts regard to be a ready-made player in the form of Lachlan Fogarty at pick 24. The Vic Metro midfielder joins the Cats star studded midfield.

- Billy Hartung was the only delisted player from 2017 to find a new home. The former Hawk joins North Melbourne, who earlier picked up Luke Davies-Uniacke.

-Premiers Richmond landed another small forward in the form of Jack Higgins (pick 16), while father-son prospect, Patrick Naish, also heads to Punt Rd.

- The Adelaide Crows struck gold at pick 12 by landing local product, Darcy Fogarty, while Sydney selected Tom McCartin, brother of Paddy, at pick 33.

On Monday November 27, players that missed out in the draft will be sweating on earning a spot on a clubs list via the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts. AFL Clubs will finalise their lists for 2018 by Wednesday November 29.
